Jobs

We’re hiring great people.

Medic Mobile is growing – watch this space for opportunities. No recruiters please.

Medic Mobile’s mission is to improve the health of the underserved and disconnected; we help health workers communicate, coordinate patient care, and provide diagnostics using low-cost mobile technology. Our organization develops software, implements mobile health programs, researches program/intervention effectiveness, and provides resources for clinical partners who use our tools. Over the last three years, our work has impacted 400,000 patients and their families.

Senior Designer

We are seeking a senior service and user experience designer with a passion for global health equity. As Medic Mobile’s leading design evangelist, you will design products and services that tackle some of the hairiest problems in global health. By embedding yourself in our growing team of technologists and public health innovators, you will help us continuously re-imagine our process for designing products and services that achieve health impact at scale. This is a long-term, key leadership position. We’re not expecting to find someone who has done everything we do; we want someone who is a solid culture fit with our team and impresses us with the way they have interacted with users, produced and articulated design insights.

The role includes guiding continued development of our existing software products (SIM card and web and smartphone apps) as well as envisioning new products based on user insights and business opportunities. It involves designing services through which partner organizations will use these tools, often in ways that are similar to past projects but also in ways we’ve not yet considered. User research will be a continuous part of all this but visual design is less critical because we’re more comfortable turfing that to individuals/firms on shorter contracts. We’re a small team with several irons in the fire, hoping to find someone who can be as opportunistic and flexible as we are.

You can live wherever you want (most of our team telecommutes). You’ll be asked to travel (up to 25% time) to locations such as Malawi, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Senegal, Cameroon, Benin, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Nicaragua, San Francisco and Portland, with user research tending towards our innovation sites in Malawi, Kenya and Nepal.

Responsibilities

Become friends with Community Health Workers (CHWs), mostly in Africa and Asia. You will develop a nuanced understanding of CHWs’ work, motivations, frustrations, beliefs, feelings, health related responsibilities, relationships, and the impact these have on patients and families. You will be a champion for CHWs among our employees, our clients, and the broader mHealth community.

Work with our local project managers and clients to design services that maximize health impact.

Emphasize locally-familiar communication technologies and Medic Mobile’s growing toolkit of open source software.

Use sketches to help our team and clients understand existing service workflows, prototype new service workflows, and identify measurable behavior changes that will result in improved health services.

Work with enormous volumes of health data, deciding where and how data can be most efficiently captured — and how automated processing or visualization can make the data actionable.

Turn user and context insights into elegant product designs.

Synthesize observations from many service design projects to create generic user profiles and user experience maps. Help our software development team build tools that can be easily adapted to a wide variety of contexts.

Speak to the needs of our users and clients as we prioritize our product roadmaps. This will include continued development of our own web and GSM-based applications, as well as customization of other open source software applications such as FrontlineSMS and OpenMRS.

Design new product interfaces or help coordinate visual identity and user interface work with external design teams.

Qualifications

- Strong background in design, including formal design training and/or impressive professional experience.

- Excellent verbal, visual and written communication skills. Nominally literate CHWs, software developers, clients and our project managers all need to understand the design process and your design decisions.

- A systems and strategic thinker, ready to tie together Medic Mobile’s users, our resources and capabilities and the funding and regulatory structures of the global health and development industries.

- Preference for designers with experience in information technology, health services or international development.
