The Community Health Toolkit

Visit the CHT Website

Medic Mobile serves as the technical steward for the Community Health Toolkit (CHT) open source project. The CHT provides you with resources to design, build, and deploy digital tools for community health. It includes open source software frameworks and applications, guides to help you design and use them, and an active community for creation, collaboration and support.

The software included in the CHT was created for people delivering care in hard-to-reach areas and work with or without connectivity. Tools built using the CHT run on basic phones, smartphones, tablets, and computers, supporting people doing critical work in communities, health facilities, and management offices.

We're committed to sharing learnings, and lowering barriers to adoption, scale, and reach for these tools. Medic Mobile developed the CHT’s application framework, and is working closely with our partners to develop and deploy reference applications that build on and extend this framework. Medic Mobile has always developed free software, and is now focused on supporting a vibrant community contributing to a global public good.

In our role as technical steward, Medic Mobile contributes code, design resources, documentation, and other assets to the CHT, and also facilitate contributions from others. Learn more about the features on the CHT website, and read below for some examples of what can be built.

Community Health Apps

The Core Framework makes it faster to build full-featured, scalable digital health apps that equip health workers to provide better care in their communities. Key user groups include community health workers, supervisors, nurses, health system managers, and even patients and caregivers.

The framework deals with health systems roles and reporting hierarchies, and supports five highly configurable areas of functionality: messaging, task schedules, decision support workflows and care protocols, person profiles, and analytics. The core features are flexible enough to support an exceptional range health programs and local care provider workflows.

Integrated task list

Tasks guide health workers through their days and weeks. Each auto-generated task prompts an Action, ensuring that people receive the right services and care at the right time.

Decision support for health services

Health workers provide crucial services for people in their communities. The app guides them through different actions, such as screening for danger signs during a pregnancy visit or assessing, diagnosing, and treating a sick child. Actions can be prompted  based on information about the health worker or person under care. They can include images and videos, conditional logic for decision-making and clinical workflows, and tailored results with next steps.

User Profiles

Health workers can easily access and manage the families and people they serve from the People tab. Profiles display important information, including demographic details, current and past health conditions with status, upcoming tasks, and history.

Visibility into progress and challenges

Health workers can easily view progress for the month against predefined targets, even while offline.

Tools for health workers using basic phones

In addition to apps that run on smartphones, we've built tools for familiar, basic phones work in communities with intermittent connectivity, leverage the most common mobile infrastructure, and harness SMS as a communication and data channel.

SMS on basic phones

Text messages enable data submission, timely reminders, and real-time communication between families, CHWs, and health facilities, strengthening the connection between last-mile communities and health facilities.

Medic Collect for Android

Medic Collect is an Android app that extends Open Data Kit (ODK), an open-source tool. The app can be easily configured and deployed to users, and includes forms with location data, in-app data validation, skip logic, and multimedia support. Health workers or managers can submit data by mobile internet, WiFi, or SMS.

Apps and analytics for managers

The combination of Community Health Apps and analytics helps managers provide targeted support for health workers and systems.

Views for data-driven management

Managers can easily monitor indicators for a specific health worker or groups of CHWs and compare performance against previous months and high-performing peers. They can also see progress for the current month against goals scaled to the current day.

Easy access to the system's data

On the Reports tab, managers can search, filter, and review submitted forms.

View of activity in the health system

Regional, national, and global managers can monitor trends for activity and submission rates.

A new level of visibility for impact metrics

Regional, national, and global managers can monitor trends for interim impact metrics and key impact metrics.
